Health &
Safety force postponement of record bid.

31 July 2009 - Two teenagers have had
to postpone their attempt on a tennis world record, writes Brian Coates.
James Finnigan and Robert Brewster, both 17, had organised
and trained for the marathon playing event today at Rastrick Tennis Club.
But earlier this month, as the Rastrick
High School students'
training was in full flow, their record attempt suffered a setback.
They had signed a disclaimer with the Guinness Book of Records but when the
paperwork came through, to meet health and safety requirements, medical staff
had to be present for the marathon attempt which would last more than 30
hours.
Through the Courier, James, of Crowtrees
Lane, Rastrick, and Robert, of Fixby, Huddersfield, appealed for doctors and nurses to be on
standby but only two came forward.
"I think we will have to postpone until mid-September," said James,
of Crowtrees Lane,
Rastrick.
"There is nothing we can do about it."
Now they are hopeful the extra time will allow them to arrange medical cover
and raise more sponsorship for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
The world record currently stands at 31 hours 35 minutes and 30 seconds, set
by George Bolter and Athos Rostan at Hickory,
North Carolina, last November.
They decided to attempt the record after being encouraged at school to get
involved in charitable work.
They have been training at the club where they are both members, doing
12-hour competitive sessions.
They have also been staying awake between 12-hour sessions in preparation for
the record attempt.

Mirfield pounce for revenge win
Aug 1 2009 – Mirfield have strengthened their promotion
credentials in Division II of the Slazenger Huddersfield Tennis League,
reports Mel Booth, Huddersfield Daily Examiner
Seeking revenge after drawing away with their opponents
earlier in the season, they scored an 11-1 victory against Marsden.
They took advantage of the fact Marsden were missing
players due to the holiday season, including Sean Stafford, who is ranked in
the top 100 in the country.
Mirfield had a full team on duty, their first pairing
being Mike Allott and Nigel Glover, second pairing Mike Butterworth and
Richard Fraser and the third pairing Marcus Walsh and Matt Hart.
In the top division, Batley are still forging towards the
title with an eight-point lead over Thongsbridge in second.
Huddersfield are in
third, a further three points adrift.
In the Ladies, Holmfirth now hold a nine-point lead over
their Holme Valley rivals Thongsbridge.
In Division II, however, there is a thrilling battle going
on between Thongsbridge B and Longley A, who are tied on 31 points at the top
of the standings.
It’s also close in Division IV, where only three points
separate Gregory Fields A and Tingley B.
