Carlisle tennis dome back in place for winter

September 12 - The air dome went back up in Bitts Park in Carlisle yesterday after it was taken down for the summer.

The inflatable dome covers the outdoor tennis courts to enable the sport to be played in bad weather during winter months.

It covers two of the four floodlit courts which opened last year, replacing flood-damaged grass courts.

CCTV has been installed to protect the dome after it was slashed soon after it went up, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage and taking it out of action for months.

Ray Bloxham, portfolio holder for environment and infrastructure at Carlisle City Council, said: “The new courts and air dome enhance the tennis provision and provide an opportunity for coaching and development of young people.

“We also hope that local residents take up the chance to sample the facility and get active over the winter months.”

The courts are managed by Carlisle Leisure Limited and can be booked by calling 01228 625543.

Jamie Murray stars at new Norwich tennis centre

September 15 - Tennis stars of the future were inspired by one of the country's leading players as a former small agricultural college once again put itself on the map of sporting excellence.
Jamie Murray, brother of World Number 2 Andy Murray, officially opened a new £3.2m tennis centre at Easton College yesterday.
The 2007 Wimbledon Mixed Doubles Champion was joined by his mum Judy, a one-time international player herself and currently a coach and TV tennis commentator, as he unveiled the eight indoor courts.
Youngsters and visitors were also given the chance to see the tennis ace play as he took part in an exhibition match, which he won, with a selection of Norfolk's home grown talent.
The state-of-the-art building marks the latest sporting facilities at the college which has expanded from its farming beginnings.
Matt Breese, sports and tennis manager at Easton College, said: “Ten years ago the college first dipped its toe into sport when it opened the sports hall and now we've got this £3.2m building, in January we will have full-size state-of-the-art Astroturf football pitches and next month will open the new £4.2m equine building.
“We are now in a position, having been a land-based college, to offer students sport as part of their courses. What started out as a small agricultural college has blown up to sport being a massive part of it.”
The complex will be used by the college to develop its sports curriculum with a variety of courses, including those for elite athletes.
It can also be used by members of the public on a pay-and-play basis and the college has links with local schools for schoolchildren to use the facilities.
Mrs Murray said: “It's a wonderful facility and as a tennis centre this is world class. To have eight indoor courts is fantastic and it not only opens the doors for training and coaching but competitions and for the general public to play recreationally. When our weather is so bad it's important to have indoor facilities.”
The new centre has been created with the help of the Norfolk Lawn Tennis Association with partnership funding from the national LTA and Learning and Skills Council.
For more information about prices, booking and sessions on offer, contact the college on 01603 731302.

Esporta produce the goods on their Italian Job in Rome

September 23 – Esporta Tennis Club came, saw and conquered at the European Seniors Club Championships in Rome, Italy last week.

Like Julius Caesar almost 2,000 years before them, the city side crossed the Rubicon with deadly effect to beat some of the best club players on the continent and lift the coveted crown in the Eternal City.
Headed by city baller Alan Jordan, the Esporta team – which includes former British number one Jeremy Bates – dropped just two rubbers on their way to the final before beating Italian side Cirrola.
Jordan said: "When Esporta moved to Peterborough two years ago we set out to become the first British team to win this event and through the commitment of this group of players and the flexibility of the club, that goal has been achieved.
"The venue was just awesome and the standard of play was very high but the team spirit was great and we remained highly motivated, believing all the way that we had the right tools for the job."
As winners Esporta now get the chance to stage the event at the club in 2010.
To assist with costs involved with hosting, Esporta are currently looking for sponsors. For more details call Jordan on 07979 500340.

Hannah, 12, is youngest ever Bracknell Lawn Tennis Club champ

September 24 - Bracknell Lawn Tennis Club’s Finals Day ended under floodlights after a pulsating day’s action earlier this month.

Given the fine weather conditions, the finals drew in a record attendance and the spectators were captivated by some epic encounters with some terrific tennis on show.

Of the 15 different finals (six junior events and nine senior events), the highlights were undoubtedly the two ‘double’ winners in Hannah Brett, who won the Ladies Singles and Girls U18 Singles titles, as well as Giles Davey, who won the Mens Singles and Doubles.

The day started with 12-year-old Hannah seeking to become the youngest ever Ladies title winner, highlighting the depth of talent present in the junior ranks at Bracknell.

She won a crucial first set against Amanda Cook 7-5, before winning 6-0 in the second for a comprehensive win.

Hannah lost her second final of the day when her and doubles partner Helen Davey lost the final of the Ladies Doubles to Amanda Cook and Lauren Taylor in two sets.

Hannah, though, collected her second win of the day as she beat Rebecca Howard in a great match to claim the Girls U18 title.

Giles collected his first title of the day, winning the third and final set against Kuki Juric 6-1.

His second title of the day in the  Mens Doubles final epitomised the importance of momentum and psychology.

When opponents Gavin Burrows and Matt Collins failed to convert a lead in the first set having led 5-2 in games, Davey and partner Trevor Kotchie came back to take the first set, before closing the match out in the second.

In the Boys U12 event, Ben Jackson emerged the winner against Sebastian Bridges in a close match.

The boys U16 and girls U12 finals soon followed, with Jordan Crane beating Miguel O’Donnell and Georgia Action beating Sophie Edgar in a repeat of last year’s final.

Not long after Rebecca Howard won a keen contest against Rebecca Weston in the Girls U16 singles event.
On adjacent courts, the Boys U18 title was also a titanic affair, with a great array of skills and court craft on display by both the victor, Alex Lombos, and Jamie Crane.

Concurrently, the Mens Doubles Plate, Mens Singles Plate and Ladies Doubles plate finals were taking place.

Nigel Hayward and Nick Watts beat Chris Dadd and Peter Smith in three sets in the doubles, Eric Felton proved too strong in defeating Barry Lacey, while Gail Trueman and Rachel Kompfner beat Eve Jones and Brenda Pitchford to win the Ladies Doubles Plate.

Soon after, Jon Stones and Sally Curry defeated Peter Blyth and Eve Jones to win the Mixed Plate event.

This left the 15th and final match –  the main draw Mixed Doubles final – as the evening’s entertainment.

Davey and Helen Davey took on Gavin Burrows and Amanda Cook (pictured below) for the second year running and, just like last year, it was another dramatic three setter.

They split the first two sets 5-7, 6-0 respectively, but as tiredness set in during the third, a break of serve was always going to be crucial.

It was Burrows and Cook who made the breakthrough right at the end and they closed out the match by winning 7-5 in the third.

The club would like to thank both club members and members of the local community who came along and supported the event as well as all the organisers.

Helensburgh Tennis Club's mixed doubles

September 25 – In Helensburgh Tennis Club’s annual President's and Vice-President's Mixed Doubles Tournament at the weekend, Linda Pender and Alan MacBeath beat Alison Fotheringham and Katie Fulton 5-4 in the closest of finals.

The handicap tournament, which included a buffet lunch, attracted a very good entry. The prizes were presented afterwards by president Mike Bews.

In the junior championships, Fraser Fulton beat Gregor Chambers in the boys under-10 event. Fraser then went on to play top junior Ciaran Losh in the under-12 event, but was beaten 2-0.

In the girls under-15 event, Katherine McPhee beat Katrina Wylie 6-3, 6-1. David Reid beat Michael Griffin 6-2, 6-4 in the boys under-18 event.

There was an excellent win for Fraser Fulton and Liam Chambers against David Reid and Jack MacLachlan in the boys under-18 doubles.

The men's 2nd veterans team was in action against Glasgow University staff last week. Ian Parlane teamed up with Bill Ram, who was making his debut in the vets team.

The pair certainly rose to the challenge and came away with a great 3-0 win. At second couple, Chris Burt and Charles Carver struggled to make an impact and eventually lost 3-0.

The ladies 2nd vets team currently lead their division as they have yet to lose a match. They won 6-0 at Broomhill followed by 5-1 wins at both Lenzie and Uddingston.

Their toughest match was at Strathgryffe, where they drew 3-3. With only Bishopton to play, they are hopeful of a chance of promotion.

The men's 3rd vets team drew 3-3 at Esporta Milngavie but lost 2-4 at Uddingston and 0-6 at Thorn Park.
