Hoe tennis courts' sale goes through August 11 – Campaigners have failed to block the sell-off
of the former West Hoe tennis courts in Plymouth. A decision to
press ahead with a sale opens the door to development on the site, which is
now a car park. Cllr Ted Fry,
the city's Cabinet member for planning, strategic housing and economic
development approved the decision on Friday to sell the former tennis courts
in Pier Street as 'surplus to its requirements'. However, Janet
James, who runs the miniature railway on the neighbouring West Hoe Park and
organised a petition against the development, yesterday vowed to fight on. She said she
and fellow-campaigners had gathered 26,000 signatures – and accused Labour
group leader Tudor Evans of losing around 17,000 of them. The Herald,
